Latin American Culture and Society

Description:
Many Latin American nations have had a tumultuous political history, beginning with the struggles of indigenous communities before the conquest and continuing to the present day. Performances often played a large role in these disputes and within Latin American cultures in general: they were used to convince and/or coerce people into being subject to the Spanish Crown and Church, celebrate holidays which mixed indigenous and Spanish customs, critique leaders with sly wit and humor and remind viewers of the atrocities of 20th century dictatorships. This course will explore how performance power and plays interact in Latin American culture asking both why the legacy of performance is so enduring in these countries and how it can be used today, as the Americas increasingly become one.
