Residential Peer Educator Job Description
General: Residential Peer Educators (
PEs) hold academic year positions through the Office of Student Success.
PEs perform seminar course facilitation with approximately 20 students, assist in establishing academic connections between linked courses, and work collaboratively with housing staff to provide academic-related programming in the living unit.
The position of Peer Educator is an approximate 12-15 hour per week commitment. Involvement with practica, internships or other jobs is typically allowed, but approval must be obtained from the PE supervisor in advance to participate in such activities.
Major Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Learning Community Responsibilities
- Facilitate LA&S 101 Seminar Course in the fall semester in conjunction with Learning Community Faculty Facilitator.
- Have weekly contact/communication with Faculty Facilitator.
- In collaboration with faculty and Faculty Facilitator, help assess community needs and participate in the creation and implementation of formal and informal activities to address those needs.
- In collaboration with Freshman-Sophomore Advising Center (FSAC) staff, facilitate academic support and information on paired courses in the spring semester.
- Assist the LC Coordinator during the spring semester in planning the LC communities for the following year.
- Work closely with residence staff, FSAC staff, and other campus staff to enhance the academic experience of the residents.
- Connect Learning Community students to the larger learning community in which it is nested by role modeling and encouraging attendance and participation at community functions (hall/system government, etc.)
- Organize on-going study group(s). Help students maintain an academic focus.
- Involve Learning Community Faculty in residence hall activities.
- Other related duties as assigned.
General responsibilities
- Serve as a role model by demonstrating good judgment, ethical behavior, respect for laws and policies, and a positive, cooperative attitude.
- Establish accessibility to and positive rapport with all resident students.
- Set a positive tone for interaction, demonstrating responsibility and respect for others' rights, feelings, lifestyles, diverse backgrounds, and personal and University property.
- Address student concerns with hall staff and hall government members by helping to educate residents, encouraging responsible behavior, and upholding University and Department of Student Housing regulations and policies.
- Facilitate problem-solving and make effective referrals.
- Serve as a contributing member of the learning community "staff team," working with the Complex Director, Assistant Complex Directors, Senior Staff Resident Assistants, Resident Assistants, Maintenance Supervisor, Custodial Supervisor, and Dining Manager and their staffs, plus front desk and security staffs.
- Perform administrative or other tasks assigned.
- Support and assist in staff recruitment and selection as assigned.
- Serve as liaison with, and as a representative of, the university community.
Required Qualifications:
At least one year of residential group living experience and 30 or more credit hours by time of employment. Full-time KU enrollment with a minimum 2.75 GPA (3.0 GPA preferred). Previous coursework completed in academic area appropriate to the Learning Community will receive priority (KU coursework preferred). Must be eligible to live in the Learning Community.
Compensation:
Students will receive free room for the time that their community is active. Most communities are active for one semester. Students typically have the option to buy out the other half of the room, which is not covered in their compensation package.
Term of Appointment:
Generally, the appointment begins the week before classes through stop day in the given semester.
